SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT AND INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE POLICY

ECPL gives the highest importance to safe operations, safe work practices, and protection of the environment and the health of its employees in the conduct of its business. In an endeavor to keep it abreast with the World Class Safety Standards, Engro Chemical Pakistan Limited signed an agreement with world renowned DuPont Safety Resources in the year 2003.

A major milestone was adoption of Process Safety Risk Management (PSRM) system. PSRM provide a frame work to manage a hazardous chemical process plant with minimum risk. The system has fourteen elements covering the technology, facilities & personnel management. Similarly Personnel (Behavioral) Safety Management Systems fourteen were also adopted which demand more active involvement of different levels of organization in day to day safety improvement. Compliance of the new system would be the major target for 2006. An external audit would be carried out by DuPont Safety resource consultants to benchmark ECPL against the world class standards. All Manufacturing systems were reviewed and upgraded to incorporate PSRM and PSM requirements including Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policy.

The new Health, Safety, & Environment Policy is more in line with Engro’s endeavor in becoming a world class performer in the field of Health, Safety & Environmental management.

The manufacturing division achieved 11.5 million man-hours with out a lost workday injury to its own employees by year end 2005. This is an all time high record since the start up of the plant in 1968. The previous best record was completion of 3.72 million man-hours without a lost workday injury. The company also completed 14.8 million man-hours without an LWI to its contract manpower.

Emergency handling & fire fighting capability analysis of the Urea plant at Daharki was also carried out using the expertise of DuPont safety resources consultant. A number of recommendations gave been given which will be implemented in 2006.

Zarkhez Plant achieved 0.4 million man hours without a lost work-day injury to an employee over a period of 3 years. In addition, 0.744 million man-hours without a LWI to any employee of our contractors were also achieved.

The non-manufacturing functions also maintained their excellent safety record and particularly creditable is the effort of the marketing sales force that achieved 17.8 million kilometers of safe driving over a period of 25 years without suffering an LWI.

ENVIRONMENT

On the environment front, 100% NEQS compliance was achieved & self reporting to Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) was started in 2005. A comprehensive environmental footprint was developed covering all manufacturing sites and functions of the company. A five-year Environmental Plan has also been developed, to reduce the environmental footprint.

The company is strongly committed to improve its environmental performance which is well reflected in its aggressive investment into environmental projects spending more than MRs. 132 since 1993. The objective of environment management is to meet the regulatory requirements & reduction in the environmental burden. The Company is committed to achieve the highest environmental standards and targeting to become a role model in Pakistan.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Occupational Health is one of ECPL’s main focus areas & it is committed to foster the best possible working environment for its employees. A comprehensive, revamped Occupation Health Program is being developed and phase-I was launched in 2005.
